Here, Caygill tells the history of the British Museum from its foundation by Act of Parliament in 1753 to the present day. She has drawn on contemporary newspapers, journals, diaries and the Museum s own archives to bring to life the personalities - the eccentric, the brilliant and the not-so-brilliant - who have peopled the Museum s galleries and imbued it with its own distinctive character... v angličtine, brožovaná, väčší formát, 62 strán

The Unfortunates
Spisovatel: Graham Laurie, Fourth Estate 2002
Katalogové číslo: G5010
Poppy Minkel is the daisy fresh, naively witty star of Laurie Graham's The Unfortunates. Poppy is a mustard heiress with crinkle-cut hair, sticky-out ears and a nutty Jewish family. When Pa goes down with the Titanic, Ma decides Poppy was destined to be the companion of her old age. Instead Thoroughly Modern Poppy, blessed with 'savoir faire and unusual beauty' sashays into 1920s New York in search of generation-defining moments. In a series of flashbulb-bright adventures Ms. Minkel acquires two husbands, two children, and a variety of breathless accomplishments--designer, aviatrix, gallerista. Poppy Minkel is determined to live up to her mantra: 'I'm modern and fun-loving and rich.' It's not all ditzy fun though, Poppy may glide along the surface of things admirably, but Laurie Graham's deft prose gets to the heart of things. The loss, grief, ignorance, and emotional vulnerbality that surround the events of the Second World War play in devasating counterpoint to Poppy's self-centred aplomb. Her breezy resilence allows her to deal with a drunken, violent first husband, with his haikus and his "glancing blows" and pretty much ignore anything else of consequence. It's only towards the end of the novel when faced with family tragedy that her regret slips in and "placed the heaviest weight around my heart". The Unfortunates is deliciously Nancy Mitford,--glinting with irony, sadness and humour.... brožovaná,v angličtine,väčší formát,370 strán

The World Below
Spisovatel: Miller Sue, Bloomsbury 2001
Katalogové číslo: E8147
Cath Hubbard, a San Francisco woman in her 50s, returns to her grandmother's small Vermont house after the death of an aunt who left the property to Cath and her brother Lawrence. Cath had lived with her grandparents for a few years in her teens, after her mother's suicide, and now makes her wounded way back, in the wake of a divorce, to sort through her memories of her beloved grandmother, Georgia. This is the standard fare of American literary fiction: a life change prompting a search into the past. What is far less ordinary is Miller's placid, nuanced depiction of her protagonist's emotional journey. None of Cath's feelings can be easily predicted by the reader, but all of them ring true. She finds her grandmother's diary and begins to fill in the stories that Georgia had hinted at over the years. What Cath discovers in her grandmother's journal is a secret that has lost its power to shock; and that very wearing away of taboo adds to the poignancy of Georgia's restricted life. Her story unfolds against a backdrop of Cath's more immediate griefs and concerns and begins to recede as Cath's San Francisco life returns to claim her. Miller's prose appears effortless, but is like the gestures of a magician that conceal how the trick is accomplished. The result is a sage, continually surprising novel about finding peace of mind in a combination of habit, love, and self-determination.... v angličtine, brožovaná, 275 strán

Until a man called Skinner robs him first of his money, in a scam in the marketplace, and then of his identity, in the ring. In England, 2005, Owen Monroe thinks he has a lead on where Skinner is now - a novel he's found which tells the story of a young boxer, a Catholic, an Anglo-Indian, who works for the railways... v angličtine, brožovaná, 410 strán
